Heartbeat
We went to the doctor’s appointment thinking we were going to get another ultrasound. We were disappointed and relived to find out you only get an ultrasound at 12 weeks if the doctor cannot find the heartbeat of the baby. Well she did and it was amazing. The doctor pulled a black speaker box and attached microphone out of a drawer. She squirted some cold jelly stuff on Carley’s belly and began moving the microphone around Carley’s stomach. As she started searching for the heartbeat she told us not to panic if she didn’t find it right away, and of course I started to panic. “Why is this taking so long, why can’t she find the heartbeat, why is there so much static, is the baby ok?” Then after about 30 seconds we heard it, it was like a fast whoosh whoosh whoosh sound. I just listened to the speaker box in amazement. I could only think of one thing. We created a little Waltenbaby.
Being the father, and not having the baby inside me, I have felt pretty distant from the whole pregnancy. To me life was pretty much the same as before, nothing was different. Hearing the heartbeat was the first thing that was tangible to me during this pregnancy. I always knew there was a baby in there, I saw the little blueberry on the sonogram, but this was not the same. There is a little person floating inside her stomach, ha ha that’s crazy.
Brian, I still remember your dad and I at the doctors hearing your heartbeat for the first time. The memory is vivid, like it was just yesterday….
ahh brian- i just got teary eyed! it will only get better and better and even more amazing each week that waltenbaby grows! can’t wait to meet her/him!
That’s exactly how Tyler said he felt when Skye was born…I can’t wait for you to tell us all how much more “real” it all seems when you hear your child cry for the first time!!
